Headway saddened by death of boxer Patrick Day

Headway – the brain injury association has expressed its sadness over the death of American boxer Patrick Day who died last night.

The charity has also reiterated its call for boxing to be banned after a year which has already seen two other fighters die in the ring.

In July, Russia's Maxim Dadashev and Argentina's Hugo Santillan both died following injuries sustained during fights.

While in recent years, Scottish welterweight Mike Towell and amateur boxer Kuba Moczyk lost their lives due to the blows they received in the ring, Nick Blackwell was left in a coma following a fight with Chris Eubank Jr, and Eduard Gutknecht sustained a devastating brain injury after fighting George Groves – leaving the German unable to walk or talk.

Peter McCabe, Chief Executive of Headway, said: “It is heartbreaking to hear of yet another tragic loss of life as a result of boxing. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Patrick’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. It is another in a long line of avoidable boxing tragedies where lives have been lost or irreparably damaged as a result of brain injury.

“Every time a boxer gets into the ring, there is a significant risk that they may lose their life or sustain a devastating, life-changing brain injury.

“Quite rightly, the focus at this time should be on supporting Patrick’s family and help them come to terms with this terrible incident. But the question remains: how many more lives have to be needlessly damaged or lost before this senseless sport is banned?”
