Further information

*Please note all face to face meetings continue to be suspended during the current pandemic**.
Headway Foyle is run by volunteers who all have personal experience of living with the effects of acquired brain injury.

Brain injury is a condition which changes the lives, not only of those who suffer the injury, but also their families. Families take most of the strain. The burden of care often places the family unit under severe pressure.

Headway Foyle promotes wider understanding of all aspects of brain injury and provides information, support and social activities for people with brain injury, their families and carers.

Our committee is composed of carers, professionals in the field of brain injury and colleagues from the community and voluntary sector.

How can Headway Foyle help you and your family?

Carers Services:

We meet on the last Thursday of every month at Foyle Disability Resource Centre, Glen Road, Derry, BT48 0BX North, 7:30pm - 9:30pm.

Our support meetings provide support to carers of individuals living with brain injury and their families with the opportunity to meet with other people who have had similar experiences, offering emotional and practical support and understanding.

The services are delivered through a range of events and activities through long term social rehabilitation offering an outlet where people can meet and share experiences through a tailored outcome based programme of activities and social events.

Our plans our reviewed periodically and are user led focussing on the needs of carers such as brain injury related support, advice and information, social activities, outings, respite days and cultural and social projects.

Activities:

Our support meetings are highly social in themselves!

Newcomers to our group and visitors always remark that it is like walking into one big, happy extended family. In addition, we organise a number of social activities throughout the year including: barbeques, respite days, day trips, meals out and we plan on delivering residential breaks similar to those offered by our sister Groups and Branches in Northern Ireland.

In 2013, we offered residential services to individuals living with brain injury over a three day period so that carers could avail of much needed respite in the knowledge that their family members was engaging in an activity break through Headway Foyle, Glen Caring Services and Western HSCT.

Information and training:

We provide free access for all our members to Headway UK training on a variety of subjects such as Understanding Brain Injury and Coping with Challenging Behaviour to name but a few.
We also engage speakers throughout the year to give talks on issues such as Benefits Advice and other Carer's issues.

An information stand is available at all our monthly meetings and brain injury literature is free to all our members.

Home Support Visits:

If families wish our volunteers will them in their own homes, giving support and information at all stages of the family's journey in coping with brain injury. We also offer a family support service to those who may not be able to attend group services.

Counselling:

We can also offer a free counselling service those in need of support through an associated counsellor (BACP Accredited).

Lobbying:

We campaign at local and regional level for improved services for brain injury survivors and their families.
