Dislabeled

Christina Sweeney

Dislabeled

Dis and able, are just two words, to put them together, is quite absurd.
Everyone is able and should not be dissed, people can try to do things and this should not be missed.
Part of me laughs, part of me cries, but most of all, I have to think I survived,
Against all odds, four times I'm declared dead,
This would have happened if my parents hadn't said,
"Our daughter can do this, it isn't the end,
We just need more time for this damage to mend."

About Christina

Q: Please tell us about your brain injury

A: 13 years ago, I had severe car crash and was left in a 13 week coma. I've forgotten my whole life, but still can be very creative, through my writing, music, poetry etc. I got told that I'd never walk or talk and my parents were told 4 times that I was dcead, but they were very wrong!

Q: What message do you want to send to people through your creative work?

A: I want people to see my story and take me as an inspiration, believing in a coma patient and seeing what they can do after an injury. The main point I want is for people to see how much can be achieved by a 'permanent vegetable' and never lose hope.

Q: What does A New Me mean to you?

A: A new me, is exactly as it reads. I am a transformed person who is willing to work my hardest to promote disabled people's abilities I want to use my skills that are 30 years old, to help transform people's lives.

Q: Are you involved with a Headway group or branch?

A: Headway Portsmouth have been amazing for me. I have attended social groups, done independent living, life skills, memory groups through them. For a while, I was a service user mentor at the Bridgemary group when I had the time.
