Rail staff pump for miles to raise hundreds for Headway

A team of superheroes from GB Railfreight’s commercial team have pumped a railway trolley for 40 miles to help raise more than £700 for Headway.

Phil Amos, Liam Day, Josh Jordan-Boddey and David Hunt dressed as their favourite crime fighters to pump their way from Peterborough to Wansford.

The team wanted to do something a bit out of the ordinary during our Challenge 40 year – and they certainly managed it!

Phil Amos said: "We found that the Nene Valley Railway had a trolley and were close by. They kindly agreed to us using nearly the whole length of their line, 6.2 miles between Peterborough and Wansford. After starting the challenge on the day we thought 40 miles may have been a target too far!

"We managed to set a fairly steady pace up and down the line getting some very strange looks from the people that we passed, particularly from the cars waiting at the level crossing!"

“A party of school children at Wansford thought it was funny, and a nurse passing by at Peterborough even gave us some additional sponsorship money when she found out what we were doing!

“The arduous journey ended up taking our team five hours and 30 minutes from start to finish, and we even reached a top speed of 18mph - although that was mainly due to going downhill.

"Despite being very tired after finishing unfortunately the aches weren’t severe enough to stop us all going to work the next day."

Jo Plant, Director of Fundraising at Headway, said: "We loved finding out about this unique Challenge 40 event  - it certainly was different! Well done to all the team for getting to the end - even if they did receive a few strange looks along the way.

"The money raised will be put to good use helping families cope and come to terms with the effects of brain injury."
