Changing Places provide specialist equipment such as hoists, changing benches, privacy curtains, a non-slip floor, large disposable waste bins and space for carers.
A £30 million fund has also been announced to install the facilities in existing buildings, with £1.27m pledged to install them at service stations across England.
This means that more than 250,000 severely disabled people will have greater access to public places.
Sarah Russell, Headway’s Public Affairs Manager, said: “Currently, more than 250,000 disabled people across the UK cannot use standard toilets, some of who have an acquired brain injury.
“They may be forced to limit what they drink to avoid needing the toilet, sit in soiled clothing or dirty nappies or reduce their time out of the house, while carers may have to manually lift someone out of a wheelchair or change them on a dirty toilet floor.
“The introduction of compulsory Changing Places will give disabled people and their carers the freedom, independence and confidence they need to go out and enjoy social activities.
“The facilities will make a huge difference to the lives of countless disabled people and their loved ones.”Back
