Ryan Mason reaches out to Raul Jimenez following clash of heads during a game last week.

Former Premier League and England footballer Ryan Mason has offered his support to Raul Jimenez and his family after the Wolves’ player suffered a fractured skull in a game against Arsenal on 29 November.

Ryan, who is now a Headway Ambassador, suffered a similar injury in 2017 while playing for Hull City against Chelsea. Despite a valiant attempt to regain fitness, Ryan was unable to play again and retired on medical advice at the age of 26.

“I was horrified to watch the incident in the game,” said Ryan. “It has brought back a lot of negative memories for me and my family, who had the agony of not knowing whether I would pull through.

“I’m sure Raul’s family are going through a very difficult time right now and my thoughts, and those of my family, are with them.

“Headway was a great help to my family, via the charity’s helpline and website, although I didn’t know it at the time. I hope that Raul’s family, friends and colleagues will also benefit from that support.

“Raul will no doubt have questions about what the future will hold. I know I wanted to get back to playing as soon as I could, but sadly that wasn’t possible. But it’s too early for that. Right now, the best thing Raul can do is listen to the doctors and take their advice, and accept all the help that is offered to him.

"He certainly has my full support and that of Headway.”
