Inspirational achievements honoured at the Headway Annual Awards

Every year Headway’s Annual Awards attract nominees with incredible and inspirational stories of dedication, love and sacrifice as people come to terms with the effects of brain injury.

In a glittering ceremony at the InterContinental Hotel in Mayfair, London, we honoured their special achievements.

Let’s meet this year’s finalists and Special Award winners:

Alex Richardson Achiever of the Year Award 2019

WINNER: Nicola Evans

When Nicola was just 13-years old, she was diagnosed with a cavernoma - a cluster of abnormal blood vessels on the brain – putting her at high risk of a haemorrhage or stroke.

Peter Brown

An inspiring man from Bromley who overcame the odds to fundraise for the charity that supported him following a brain injury has been nominated for a national award.

Brooke Trotter

A Scarborough man who had a 30% chance of survival after being hit by a speeding car has been shortlisted for a national award for his efforts to help prevent accidents on the road.

A Bristolian mother who had to give up her career in her twenties to become a full-time carer has been shortlisted for a national award.

A mother from Worcester who fought tirelessly to ensure her son got the best possible care following his brain injury has been shortlisted for a national award.

Jackie Flavell

Luke and Jackie

A mother from Dudley who has not only dedicated the past eight years to caring for her son after he sustained a life-changing brain injury but who also helped set up a support group to help others, has been shortlisted for a national award.

Angela Caulfield

A mum-of-two from County Durham who not only found time to support her son following a traumatic brain injury, but also set up a charity to help other survivors has been shortlisted for a national award.

A volunteer who has help to set up a carers group to help others coping with life after brain injury has been shortlisted for a national award.

Gillian Richards

Gillian Richards

A Sussex-based volunteer whose life has been dramatically affected by brain injury has been nominated for a national award after generously giving her time to help fellow survivors.

Rachel Rees

A mother who has dedicated more than 26 years volunteering for a Stockport brain injury charity has been nominated for a national award.

Lesley McGuire

Lesley McGuire

After Lesley McGuire’s son sustained a traumatic brain injury in 2010, she became his full-time carer and later went on to volunteer at the charity which supported him throughout his recovery.

Evelyn Menzies

A Perthshire mother who has dedicated the past two decades to improving the lives of those living with brain injuries has been nominated for a national award.

The ceremony concluded with a series of special awards, presented to organisations who have gone the extra mile to support the work of Headway.

The NPCC, Police Federation and Thompsons Solicitors received special accolades for their support of the charity’s Justice Project. The project aims to raise awareness of brain injury within the criminal justice system, and ensure survivors are identified at the earliest possible opportunity to ensure they receive appropriate support.

Stewarts Foundation

Stewarts Foundation received the award for its consistent support of Headway's Emergency Fund, which provides grants of up to £500 to help survivors and their families cope with the sudden practical implications which often arise following a brain injury.
